What the SIE exam actually is
The Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam is FINRA's introductory securities exam. FINRA describes it as an introductory-level exam covering basic securities-industry knowledge, and it is open to anyone age 18 or older — association with a firm is not required to take the SIE.
According to FINRA, the SIE has 75 scored questions (plus a few unscored pretest questions), a 1 hour 45 minute time limit, a passing score of 70, and a $100 fee. A passing SIE result stays valid for four years.

How securities exam prep provider comparison works
Securities exam prep is a national provider market. The key decision is not a state-approved school list; it is which exam sequence, study format, support level, and public provider information fits the candidate.
SIE is commonly the starting point for new candidates. Series 6 and Series 7 are FINRA top-off exams and generally require firm association. Series 63, Series 65, and Series 66 are NASAA uniform exams tied to broker-dealer agent or investment adviser representative paths.
