Broker-dealer representative candidates usually work through a sequence rather than a single exam. The exact order depends on the firm and role.
- Start with the SIE — the entry exam, which can be taken without firm sponsorship.
- Add the Series 7 — the General Securities Representative top-off exam, which has the SIE as a corequisite and requires firm or SRO association and sponsorship.
- Add a state-law exam where required — usually the Series 63, or the Series 66 if you are also pursuing an adviser path with the Series 7.
How to choose broker representative exam prep

- Most candidates take the SIE first because it needs no sponsor, then sit the Series 7 once they are associated with a firm.
- The Series 7 is the heaviest lift, with study loads commonly in the range of 80 to 150 hours, roughly double the SIE.
- The state-law exam is a lighter add-on: the Series 63 is short and dense (often a week or two of study), while the Series 66 is longer because it also covers adviser law.

How securities exam prep provider comparison works
Securities exam prep is a national provider market. The key decision is not a state-approved school list; it is which exam sequence, study format, support level, and public provider information fits the candidate.
SIE is commonly the starting point for new candidates. Series 6 and Series 7 are FINRA top-off exams and generally require firm association. Series 63, Series 65, and Series 66 are NASAA uniform exams tied to broker-dealer agent or investment adviser representative paths.
Choose the right securities exam prep package
Match difficulty to support level
Budget self-paced prep can be enough for SIE or Series 63 if the candidate studies consistently. Series 7, Series 65, and Series 66 often justify deeper QBank access, video instruction, live class support, or a premium provider.
