Series 65 official exam facts
The Series 65 is NASAA's Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination, which tests investment adviser representative competency under state law. It is administered through FINRA channels but is not a FINRA representative top-off exam like the Series 6 or Series 7, and it does not require firm sponsorship to sit.
Passing the Series 65 may satisfy only part of a state IAR registration requirement and does not by itself authorize advisory business before the state grants the required license or registration.
- Format: 130 scored questions (140 total, including 10 unscored pretest questions).
- Time and score: 180 minutes; at least 92 of the 130 scored questions correct to pass.
- NASAA exam fee: $187.
- Eligibility: no firm sponsorship or prerequisite exam is required to sit.
- Topic weights: economics and business 15%, investment vehicles 25%, client recommendations and strategies 30%, laws/regulations/ethics 30%.

Start with your state and role path. The Series 65 is commonly used for investment adviser representative qualification, but exact requirements can vary by state, firm, role, exemption, or professional designation.

Series 65 vs Series 66 and representative exams
The Series 65 is separate from FINRA representative exams such as the Series 6 and Series 7. Do not treat it as a top-off representative exam or as proof that advisory business can begin before registration is complete.
The Series 66 is also a separate NASAA exam — a combined state-law exam used with the Series 7 — while the Series 65 is the standalone Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination. Confirm which exam path your state, role, and firm require.

SIE is commonly the starting point for new candidates. Series 6 and Series 7 are FINRA top-off exams and generally require firm association. Series 63, Series 65, and Series 66 are NASAA uniform exams tied to broker-dealer agent or investment adviser representative paths.
Choose the right securities exam prep package
Match difficulty to support level
Budget self-paced prep can be enough for SIE or Series 63 if the candidate studies consistently. Series 7, Series 65, and Series 66 often justify deeper QBank access, video instruction, live class support, or a premium provider.
Review sponsorship timing before paying
SIE does not require firm sponsorship. Series 6 and Series 7 generally require a member-firm or SRO association. NASAA Series 63, 65, and 66 are uniform state-law/adviser exams, but registration requirements still depend on the role and regulator path.
