Series 66 official exam facts
The Series 66 is NASAA's Uniform Combined State Law Examination. It is used with the Series 7 for combined broker-dealer agent and investment adviser representative state-law qualification; passing the Series 66 by itself does not replace the Series 7 or grant state registration.
Passing the Series 66 may satisfy only part of a state requirement and does not convey the right to transact advisory or securities business before state license or registration.
- Format: 100 scored questions (110 total, including 10 unscored pretest questions).
- Time and score: 150 minutes; at least 73 of the 100 scored questions correct to pass.
- NASAA exam fee: $177.
- Corequisite: the Series 7 must also be passed and valid for IAR registration based on the Series 66.
- Topic weights: economics and business 8%, investment vehicles 17%, client recommendations and strategies 30%, laws/regulations/ethics 45%.
How the Series 66 fits with the Series 7
NASAA says the Series 7 is a corequisite for the Series 66. Either exam may be taken first, but both the Series 66 and the Series 7 must be completed satisfactorily before applying to register with a state based on the Series 66.
Do not treat the Series 66 as a replacement for the Series 7. Follow your firm, state, and compliance instructions before choosing this route instead of the Series 65.
What students say about the Series 66

- The Series 66 is heavy on laws, regulations, and ethics (about 45% of the exam), and candidates often describe the legal questions as tricky because of dense, convoluted wording.
- Study loads commonly land in the range of roughly 50 to 70 hours, since it combines the state-agent and adviser-law material of the Series 63 and Series 65.
- Careful reading of exemptions, prohibited practices, and adviser duties tends to matter more than raw speed, so timed practice on law scenarios is the study habit most passers mention.
Series 66 vs Series 65 and Series 63
The Series 66 is not merely the Series 65 under a different name. NASAA says the Series 66 qualifies an individual as if both the Series 63 and Series 65 had been passed, but the Series 7 must also be passed and valid for IAR registration based on the Series 66.
Candidates who are not pairing with the Series 7 may need to compare the Series 65 instead, depending on role, state, and firm path.
State registration and enrollment caveats
NASAA and FINRA describe firm-filed Form U4 or individual FINRA enrollment paths. Associated broker-dealer or investment-adviser candidates should consult their firm first because a Form U4 may be required.
FINRA opens a scheduling window after enrollment. Confirm scheduling, accommodations, state-registration, and firm requirements before paying for prep or opening an exam window.

How securities exam prep provider comparison works
Securities exam prep is a national provider market. The key decision is not a state-approved school list; it is which exam sequence, study format, support level, and public provider information fits the candidate.
SIE is commonly the starting point for new candidates. Series 6 and Series 7 are FINRA top-off exams and generally require firm association. Series 63, Series 65, and Series 66 are NASAA uniform exams tied to broker-dealer agent or investment adviser representative paths.

Match difficulty to support level
Budget self-paced prep can be enough for SIE or Series 63 if the candidate studies consistently. Series 7, Series 65, and Series 66 often justify deeper QBank access, video instruction, live class support, or a premium provider.
Review sponsorship timing before paying
SIE does not require firm sponsorship. Series 6 and Series 7 generally require a member-firm or SRO association. NASAA Series 63, 65, and 66 are uniform state-law/adviser exams, but registration requirements still depend on the role and regulator path.
