Series 6 official exam facts

The Series 6 – Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products Representative Exam is a representative-level FINRA top-off exam. Candidates must pass both the SIE and the Series 6 for Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products registration, and must be associated with and sponsored by a FINRA member firm or other applicable SRO member firm to be eligible.

  • Format: 50 scored questions (55 total, including 5 unscored pretest questions).
  • Time, score, and fee: 1 hour 30 minutes; passing score 70; $100 FINRA fee.
  • Eligibility: firm or SRO association and sponsorship are required for this representative-level exam.
  • SIE: corequisite for Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products registration.
  • What it grants: authority for mutual funds, variable annuities, variable life insurance, unit investment trusts (UITs), and municipal fund securities such as 529 plans.
  • Scope: narrower than the Series 7 general securities representative exam.

How to choose Series 6 exam prep

Series 6 prep is most relevant for candidates working toward investment company and variable contracts products registration. Start with sponsorship timing: the SIE can be taken without firm association, but the Series 6 cannot, so confirm your member-firm or SRO sponsorship path before buying top-off prep.

Compare QBank depth, practice finals, video instruction, and retake planning before price alone. Two providers include CertLaunch partner pricing — Kaplan (20% off) and ExamFX / Training Consultants (30% off with code Cert30); the others are shown at standard public prices.

What students say about the Series 6

General peer insight, not a promise of any individual result:

  • The Series 6 is narrower than the Series 7 in product scope, and candidates commonly describe it as moderate difficulty focused on funds, variable products, and suitability.
  • Study loads reported are usually lighter than the Series 7, often in the range of a few dozen focused hours spread over a couple of weeks.
  • Like the Series 7, the Series 6 tests application and suitability rather than pure recognition, so realistic practice questions and worked explanations tend to matter most.

Series 6 vs Series 7 and the state-law exams

Series 6 is a separate representative-level exam with a narrower product scope than Series 7. The SIE is the entry exam and can be taken without sponsorship, but passing it alone does not authorize securities business.

Series 63, Series 65, and Series 66 are separate NASAA state-law exams. Depending on your role, state, and registration path, one of those may be required in addition to a FINRA representative exam.

How securities exam prep provider comparison works

Securities exam prep is a national provider market. The key decision is not a state-approved school list; it is which exam sequence, study format, support level, and public provider information fits the candidate.

SIE is commonly the starting point for new candidates. Series 6 and Series 7 are FINRA top-off exams and generally require firm association. Series 63, Series 65, and Series 66 are NASAA uniform exams tied to broker-dealer agent or investment adviser representative paths.

Choose the right securities exam prep package

Match difficulty to support level

Budget self-paced prep can be enough for SIE or Series 63 if the candidate studies consistently. Series 7, Series 65, and Series 66 often justify deeper QBank access, video instruction, live class support, or a premium provider.

Review sponsorship timing before paying

SIE does not require firm sponsorship. Series 6 and Series 7 generally require a member-firm or SRO association. NASAA Series 63, 65, and 66 are uniform state-law/adviser exams, but registration requirements still depend on the role and regulator path.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. FINRA treats Series 6 as a representative-level qualification exam, so candidates must be associated with and sponsored by a FINRA member firm or other applicable SRO member firm.
