Real estate continuing education by state
Continuing education keeps an active real estate license in good standing. After your first license, every state requires recurring CE to renew — but the required hours, mandatory topics, renewal cycle, and approved providers are set by each state real estate commission, so the right course depends entirely on where you hold your license.
Start with your state requirement
Required hours range widely: Kentucky and Arkansas require as little as 6–7 hours per year, Texas requires 18 hours every two years, Ohio and Oklahoma require 30 hours every three years, and California and Wyoming require 45 hours per renewal. Many states also mandate specific topics — Texas Legal Update I and II, a state Core Course, ethics, fair housing, or agency law — so an hour total alone does not tell you whether a package qualifies. Each state page lists the exact requirement with the state commission cited.
Online, live, and hybrid formats
Most states approve self-paced online CE, which is the fastest and lowest-cost path. A few states require part of the requirement through live instruction: Nevada requires 18 of 36 hours live, Iowa requires at least 12 of 36 hours live, and New Mexico requires an annual in-person or approved-distance Core Course. Compare the full-requirement package, not a single course
The most common mistake is buying a cheap one-off course that does not complete the requirement. Discounts and completion reporting
