Series 7 official facts before you compare providers

The Series 7 – General Securities Representative Exam is a representative-level FINRA top-off exam. Candidates need the SIE as a corequisite and must be associated with and sponsored by a FINRA member firm or other applicable SRO member firm to be eligible.

  • Exam: FINRA Series 7 – General Securities Representative Exam.
  • Format: 125 scored questions (130 total, including 5 unscored pretest questions).
  • Time, score, and fee: 3 hours 45 minutes; passing score 72; $395 FINRA fee.
  • Eligibility: firm or SRO association and sponsorship are required for this representative-level exam.
  • SIE: corequisite — candidates must pass both the SIE and the Series 7 for General Securities Representative registration.
  • What it grants: authority to solicit and transact a broad range of securities, including corporate and municipal securities, options, investment company products, direct participation programs, and variable contracts.
  • State-law note: Series 63, Series 65, and Series 66 are separate NASAA exams that depend on role, state, and registration path.

How to choose Series 7 exam prep

Series 7 is longer than the SIE and Series 6 and broader than Series 6 in product scope, so many candidates should prioritize realistic practice finals, a strong QBank, and structured support over starting price alone.

Compare how each provider handles practice finals, answer explanations, QBank depth, live or video instruction, and the study calendar your sponsoring firm expects. Two providers include CertLaunch partner pricing — Kaplan (20% off) and ExamFX / Training Consultants (30% off with code Cert30); the others are shown at standard public prices.

What students say about the Series 7

General peer insight, not a promise of any individual result:

  • The Series 7 is widely described as the most comprehensive securities representative exam; the challenge is the breadth of scope more than raw difficulty.
  • Candidates commonly budget roughly 80 to 150 study hours, versus about 40 to 60 for the SIE, and people newer to finance tend to need the higher end.
  • Unlike the SIE, which tests recognition, the Series 7 tests application such as suitability judgments and calculations, so realistic practice finals and worked explanations matter most.
  • Many who do not pass on the first try pass on the second by using the waiting period to target their weakest areas.

How Series 7 fits after SIE

The SIE can be taken without sponsorship, but the Series 7 cannot. FINRA lists the SIE as a corequisite, and candidates must pass both the SIE and the Series 7 to obtain General Securities Representative registration.

Order and timing should follow your sponsoring firm and the FINRA enrollment process, because Series 7 eligibility depends on firm or other applicable SRO member association and sponsorship.

Series 7 vs Series 6

Series 7 covers broader general securities representative activity. Series 6 is narrower and focuses on investment company and variable contracts products.

Insurance agents adding variable products should confirm with their firm whether their role calls for Series 6, Series 7, and/or separate state-law exams.

State-law exams are separate

Series 63, Series 65, and Series 66 are NASAA state-law exams and are not satisfied just because a candidate passes the Series 7.

Exact state-law or adviser-registration needs depend on role, state, and registration path.

How securities exam prep provider comparison works

Securities exam prep is a national provider market. The key decision is not a state-approved school list; it is which exam sequence, study format, support level, and public provider information fits the candidate.

SIE is commonly the starting point for new candidates. Series 6 and Series 7 are FINRA top-off exams and generally require firm association. Series 63, Series 65, and Series 66 are NASAA uniform exams tied to broker-dealer agent or investment adviser representative paths.

Choose the right securities exam prep package

Match difficulty to support level

Budget self-paced prep can be enough for SIE or Series 63 if the candidate studies consistently. Series 7, Series 65, and Series 66 often justify deeper QBank access, video instruction, live class support, or a premium provider.

Review sponsorship timing before paying

SIE does not require firm sponsorship. Series 6 and Series 7 generally require a member-firm or SRO association. NASAA Series 63, 65, and 66 are uniform state-law/adviser exams, but registration requirements still depend on the role and regulator path.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. FINRA treats Series 7 as a representative-level qualification exam, and candidates must be associated with and sponsored by a FINRA member firm or other applicable SRO member firm to be eligible.
